It's hard for me to keep up.....

.........with all of the popular "tween" and "teen" stars around these days. Plus it doesn't help if you don't have the Disney Channel. The Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana, Demi Lovato, Vanessa Hudgens, and Selena Gomez are a few of the hot ones out there right now. In a recent interview Selena Gomez talked about how she was named after the original Selena. The queen of Tex-Mex music.

I think Selena Gomez is going out with one of the Jonas Brothers too. Anyway, if you want to get all the latest gossip on who was on what show, who's dating who, what songs they have out, etc.....you're gonna have to look all that up on your own because it's too much for me to even bother with. Or, maybe try asking your kids, nephews or nieces. I'm sure they would be shocked you don't know (does that mean we're getting old?) and they would gladly explain it all to you :)

24 year old Angel Pantoja Medina of Puerto Rico had a wish for after he died: to stand upright at his wake when he died. And if you read the full story you can see a slideshow of the pictures. Creepy!

What's even creepier is that it said he was found dead underneath a bridge.

Well then, I'm a lazy ass

So the ultimate diva, Jennifer Lopez, will be competing in a triathlon. That means she will be swimming, cycling, and running all in the same day for a really long time. I don't even think I can do one of those in one day. Anyway, here is a video of Mrs. Lopez-Anthony talking about her training and also some shots of her in training.

Wow. Now that's a fatty!

"MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — A 700-pound man once considered the world's most obese person left his home for the first time in five months Sunday with the aid of a forklift and a platform truck."

At his highest weight he was 1,235 pounds! I cannot imagine that life or how miserable it has to be!

The auditions are open to men and women ages 16 to 28 as of July 15 who are eligible to work in the United States. All the info can be found at AmericanIdol.com.

Yoga event stretches across US-Mexico border fence

"A few dozen yoga aficionados rolled out their mats Sunday on both sides of the wall between Tijuana, Mexico, and San Diego. The international group stretched and meditated together before exchanging hugs through the fence bars.
The session was organized by the Border Meetup Group, which promotes cross-border understanding by staging social events on the divided beach."

Well, this is quite an interesting thing to do. I guess I had never thought of it, but whatever works!

Mexico City, a Cultural Guide

Here is an article from the Wall Street Journal.

"David Lida first visited Mexico City in 1987 as a tourist and moved there in 1990 to work as a freelance journalist. He has now written a fast-paced account of daily life in a city that defines description: "First Stop in the New World: Mexico City, The Capital of the 21st Century."

I just thought it was interesting because I have been to Mexico City a few times. Mostly through the airport, but I have been able to drive around for a bit twice. It definitely has a reputation of being overcrowded, polluted, and full of crime, so this should be an interesting inside look of a foreigner going in and telling his story.

Christina Aguilera "Rocks Out" her baby

Is it just me, or do too many people not really care about Christina and her baby? What seems to be getting more attention are her twins. She is kicking off the new campaign for the Rock the Vote organization.

"In the new broadcast ad, set to debut later this summer, Aguilera sings a lullaby of "America the Beautiful" to her son, who was born in January. The Grammy winner said she didn't think twice about putting her son in the spot because it's "inevitable that he will be subjected to some amount of press," so it might as well be channeled into a good cause."

If you go to Costa Rica and want to bring back a stray pet, make sure you REALLY want it!

So let's say you're in Costa Rica for whatever reason and you absolutely fall in love with a stray cat or dog. You want to bring it back home to the States. What do you do? I honestly didn't think you could, or if you could it would be a huge hassle. Here is a bit of info:

"If you are going back to the States, or Canada, it is actually very easy. The dog, or cat, will need to receive all the required vaccinations, including rabies. Any vet will know what to do, and they will then provide you with a certificate that you will need to present at the airport, prior to your trip. Upon arrival on U.S. or Canadian soil, domestic dogs or cats must be free of evidence of diseases that can be contracted by humans. If the animal is not in apparent good health, further examination by a licensed veterinarian may be required at the owner’s expense."

Teaching Black and Hispanic kids how to swim

This is just a follow up on a previous story I had mentioned.

"When Kelvin Franklin heard the results from a recent national study that nearly 60 percent of black children cannot swim, he was not surprised.
As aquatics director at the YMCA's Shades Valley branch, Franklin sees firsthand that minority youths are not as likely as white children to take swimming lessons, mirroring the survey taken by USA Swimming. "

Don't ask me what time it is

Cuz I don't even know. On Sunday Mexico sprang forward an hour.

"Clocks in Mexico will spring forward an hour at 2 a.m. The time change will end the one-hour time difference that existed on the border for the past four weeks, a difference that affected thousands of people who split their time between Baja California and San Diego County."

That makes sense because when I talked to my dad a few days ago he said he was 2 hours ahead from me now. Arizona doesn't do daylight savings time for some reason that I'm too lazy to research right now, so for my family and friends in IL I usually have to remind them of that time difference. I'm either an hour behind or 2 hours behind. As of right now I'm 2 hours behind. And yes, I have been woken up by many a text message at 6 am or earlier by lovely friends who think that I'm awake at those ungodly hours because they themselves are at work or on their way to work :)

In a Perfect World...........according to Mexicans though

Did they think this wouldn't make some people mad? Especially with all the immigration hullabaloo going on.

"The colorful ad, created by the Teran\TBWA agency and the vodka maker, is a sight gag depicting what a map of North America might look like "In an Absolut world," i.e., a perfect one.

It shows the Mexican border extending, very roughly, to its position during the 1800s before the Mexican-American War.

At that time, California as we now know it was part of Mexican territory and known as Alta California. Those territories eventually became U.S. property after the voluntary annexation of Texas and, later, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo."

I mean, it doesn't offend me. I honestly don't even care. It's pretty clever on their part though.

No Boys Allowed

Mexico City now has women only buses. This is a sigh of relief for many that are tired of being harassed or groped.

"The women-only bus service, launched in January, is the city's answer to a long-standing complaint among Mexican women that in the sardine-can confines of buses and subways, some men simply will not keep their hands to themselves."

At least for me, and knowing what I know about the city, it would definitely make me feel much better.

On St. Patrick's Day, many Mexicans will raise a glass to commemorate the "Irish martyrs" who are regarded as heroes in a war that still arouses passions here."

"Jennifer and Marc will reportedly name their babies Max and Emme."

Christina Aguilera named her son Max too. Hopefully there won't be any cattiness about that. I also heard that Christina is apparently pissed that J. Lo is getting a lot more money for her baby pictures than Christina did. But, what can you do? As for Emme, how do you pronounce that? Like Emmy? New Music

I've added some music to the blog for you to (hopefully) enjoy. I tried to give a nice mix of styles by adding Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Spanish, Colombian, Argentian, Mexican American, and Ecuadorian American artists.

The Movies

I recently switched back to Netflix from Blockbuster online. Why? Because I just didn't really feel like going to the Blockbuster store every week to trade in movies that were mailed out to me for free, in-store movies. It's a nice perk of the program, but honestly I would just get lazy. Plus with Netflix I like being able to watch some movies and tv shows online too. (I recently started watching The L word) So anyway, just thought I would share a list of certain movies in Spanish that are subtitled in English that I've seen that I think you should check out. There are still sooooo many movies of all different genres that I want to see. Any suggestions you have would be great too!

I've included the trailers in each of the links:
Amores Perros (Love's a bitch)
El Crimen Del Padre Amaro (The Crime of Father Amaro)
La Mujer De Mi Hermano (My Brother's Wife)
Maria Full of Grace

Young Hispanic Women More Likely Than Other Girls To Attempt Suicide

According to the Washington Post and as reported on the Kaiser Network, young Hispanic women are more likely than other girls to attempt suicide. I can't say I've known anybody that was like this. I thought it would have been something that was more visible with white teenagers. The article is interesting nonetheless and it would be interesting to see other studies.

Lean like a chola

Oh Youtube. How I love thee. I know I've put videos up in past posts, and honestly, I don't see myself stopping anytime soon. There are just too many great (and when I say great I mean horrible) videos out there. It would be a shame not to share them with all of you. Anyway, there was a song I'm sure you've heard at some point called "Lean like a cholo." There have been many videos put out of "Lean like a chola," the female version of this song.

What is this about?

The comments aren't the nicest, but did she really have to spend her Saturday night in her parent's house doing this, and then decide to actually post it thinking it was great? Pobrecita.

Bordertown

I watched this movie over the weekend. I know a lot of people have their issues with Jennifer Lopez. Well, she doesn't bother me and I have to give her some props for doing all she does. Anyway, I thought this movie was very good and gave me some insight as to what atrocities have been happening in Ciudad Juarez in Mexico. For those who don't know, Juarez is right across the border from El Paso, Texas. This movie is about the hundreds of rapes and murders that have been happening to Mexican women (many of whom work in factories late at night). Many of the cases go unsolved and many have not received proper justice due to some corruption in the government. I don't want to give away too much. But here is the trailer. Bottom line, intense moments based on true events. J. Lo also seems to be wearing a really bad wig in the beginning ha.

Is Shakira really that iconic?

Hair care brand Sunsilk hopes to inspire women around the world to live life to the fullest with their "Life Can't Wait" Campaign during the Super Bowl on February 3. The Campaign features three of the world's "most iconographic females "-- Madonna, Shakira and Marilyn Monroe. (Shakira? Really?) I mean, I do like me some Shakira, but to compare her to Madonna and Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn Monroe is in a class of her own. So is Madonna. I think Shakira still has a ways to go to get up to that status.

"Spanning three continents and fifteen countries, the campaign showcases these universal icons and reveals significant and life-defining moments in their lives -- moments which inspired them to discover themselves, their identities and their always-evolving styles. The series of ads represent three artists who embody making life happen and seizing the moment."

Life defining moments huh? I'm interested to see what those will be.
